Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12

"Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love, honor one another above yourselves, and never be lacking in zeal. Serve the Lord with spiritual fervor, be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. Share with those in need and practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you, rejoice with those who rejoice, and mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony, do not be proud, and associate humbly with all people. Do not repay evil for evil; instead, overcome evil with good and live at peace with everyone."

Romans 12:9-21

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[a] Do not be conceited.

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[b] says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
    if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[c]

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

Romans 12:9-21

Today's Devotion

After great-grandma Clara passed away, her ten-foot-long prayer list became a family heirloom, filled with names of loved ones and ministry leaders. Seeing her faithful prayers recorded across decades moved her descendants deeply. The apostle Paul urged believers to be "faithful in prayer" (Romans 12:12), emphasizing how prayer sustains love in action and enables us to overcome evil with good. Through consistent, devoted prayer—whether for family, friends, or spiritual leaders—we create a legacy of faithfulness that impacts generations. Prayer is the foundation that transforms our good works into expressions of Christ's love and leaves an enduring witness to His worthiness.

Today's Insight

Romans 12:9-21 reveals love as the cornerstone of Christian living, echoing Paul's teachings on love's centrality in 1 Corinthians 13. Love conquers evil through faithful dedication to others, reflecting Christ's Sermon on the Mount ideals of humility and meekness. Rather than repaying evil for evil, believers are called to embody Christ's example of loving those who oppose them. When we remain "faithful in prayer," the Holy Spirit empowers us to love authentically and build a lasting legacy of faithfulness for future generations.
